IT'S. ALL. DAY.

Focus on Your Own Dam Grass

Episode Summary

In today's "Light Bulb Moments" episode I talk about a quote that says: "Focus on watering your garden so much that you forget to compare your garden to anyone else's!" This is now written on my bathroom mirror as a constant reminder!

Episode Notes

You're playing this comparison game, and as a result, you don't even pay attention to your own grass because you're so concerned about your neighbors and you're looking left and right, and you just end up not being happy and a little bit bitter until you realize a couple things. When it comes to focusing on watering your garden and this idea, it has a lot of relevance to plenty of clients that I've had, and this concept goes across the board.

It doesn't have to be just metaphorically speaking, watering garden. You know, how many of us have gone into the gym worrying about what others. Think about us in the gym. It's the same thing. We're going into the gym to work on ourselves. We are watering our own, quote unquote garden our body by putting in daily efforts in daily works.

And when we go in to do this, instead of just focusing on doing the reps, doing what's necessary to water our garden, we're focused on the people to our left. We're focused on the people to our right, and we're comparing ourselves because we might have been really excited to lift 40 pounds for the first time today in the gym, and maybe we get that done and we feel pretty accomplished for a couple minutes until a kid who's, I don't know, two or three years younger than you, comes up and hands up, repping whatever you were just doing with seventies instead of forties.

Instead of you being happy at the fact that you made progress and that you did the work and you've done everything you needed to do to water your garden at your own pace and be happy and content about the progress.

Instead, we now compare our progress to somebody else who we may not even know.

Use this podcast as a reminder that true progress comes when we focus on our own progress instead of comparing ourselves to others.

Do the daily habits needed to reap the rewards of those efforts later down the line and you'll never regret those efforts or how great your lawn turns out because of these efforts!

What is up guys!

Welcome to another episode of the It's All Day podcast, and today we are going to be talking about a concept that I wanna call light bulb moments. So these are gonna be shorter podcasts where we go over one insight that hopefully clicks on a light bulb in your brain to where you go, Oh man.

Thank you for saying that. Thank you for reminding me of that. Thank you for bringing that to light. Thank you for potentially giving me this insight for the very first time. One of the things I've always loved as a coach, as I have been reflecting has been when I've had a client, whether that's an online client or an in-person client, come to me and say, Chris, I've never been able to do this thing.

But if it wasn't for the one thing you said, for the one cue you gave me for the one explanation for that one way that you made the dots connect. If it wasn't for that, the light bulb would've never went off, and I would've never known it if it wasn't for you. I absolutely thrive off of that feeling, um, and giving people.

Those light bulb moments. So that's what today is going to be about. And uh, today's concept is from a video I heard, I think just yesterday, and it was so powerful that I ended up writing it on the mirror in my bathroom. And the whole quote is, be so focused on watering your own garden that you don't even have time to notice if anybody else's grass is greener than yours.

Just let that sink in for a sec because this has been a huge one for me, whether I've realized it or not. This, this video was my own light bulb moment and it kind of woke me up and made me remember, hey man. You're so focused on everybody else's grass. You're so focused on what everybody else is doing, um, where they're at in their lives as compared to yours.

We're focused on the people to our right, and we're comparing ourselves because we. Might have been really excited to lift 40 pounds for the first time today in the gym, and maybe we get that done and we feel pretty accomplished for a couple minutes until a kid who's, I don't know, two or three years younger than you, comes up and hands up, repping whatever you were just doing with seventies instead of forties.

Instead of you being happy at the fact that you made progress and that you did the work and you've done everything you needed to do to water your garden at your own pace and be happy and content about the progress, instead, we now compare our progress to somebody else who we may not even know.

I think one of the biggest ones that happens is we compare ourselves, others. Without knowing the full story, we may not recognize or realize what the other person has gone through to get to where they are. And it might not be a good story. It might be that the person had a really hard upbringing. It might be the person has had a lot of unfortunate circumstances, and as a result, they've powered through.

They've became a stronger person and they're on the better side. And maybe they're doing better than us, but the reality is they had to go through a lot of. Shit that we're pretty grateful that we never had to go through. And yet we're comparing ourselves and we don't even know the full story. We might think they're happy and in reality they're completely fucking sad at home.

But they put on this facade and we believe this facade, and we look at their lawn and we think, Wow, their fricking garden's beautiful. And you don't realize underneath, it's not what it looks like on the outside. So focus on watering your garden. Because here's the worst thing that happens. If you stop focusing on wor watering your garden, and you always compare yourself to everybody else's, you end up not taking care of your garden and you end up taking care of your garden no longer for your own joy.

For your own joy of the process for. Loving and doing these things in a caring way, you end up doing them for everybody else instead of you watering your garden for you. Now you wanna make your garden amazing because you want to keep up with the Joneses and you wanna keep up with your neighbors. And as a result, even if you get compliments on the garden, you might look at the garden and go, Man, this was never the garden I ever fucking.

I wanted a garden with orange trees and avocados, and I ended up having all these stupid fucking flowers because all the neighbors have flowers and everyone comments on how nice the flowers are, and I think my yard looks stupid without flowers. So now I got flowers and everyone gives me compliments except for the fact that I hate the fucking flowers because I no longer have oranges and avocados.

So don't ever compromise your own garden to appease others. Focus. So much on watering your garden that you don't have any time to spend looking and comparing yourself to other people's grass to see if theirs is greener than yours. Because if you can do that, you'll live a happier and a more fulfilled life.

And until next time, guys, Peace!
